RENO, NEV. –San Diego State Track and Field wrapped up the Mountain West Indoor Championships with multiple podium worthy performances. Across the three days of competition San Diego State secured four medals, multiple personal best and a top five overall team finish.
Xiamara Young, coming off a gold medal performance in the long jump, entered the final day as the favorite in the triple jump. Young was dominant from the start, clearing 13.00m on all six of her attempts. She saved her best for last jumping 13.48m that not only stands as a new personal best but also moved Young into third all-time in the SDSU record books. Only two other competitors eclipsed the 13.00m mark on the day while Young is now tied for the sixth best triple jump mark in the NCAA Division I ranks. Alyssa Alumbres also cracked the top 10 jumping a personal best 12.19m.
On the track freshman Shari Hurdman continued her strong performance in the 400-meter dash. After setting the fifth fastest indoor time in program history on Friday she followed it up running 53.60 in the finals. That time now stands as the third fastest indoor performance by an Aztec. In the 200-meter dash Aji Mbye earned a bronze medal running a personal best of 23.43. That moves Mbye into the fourth fastest time in the record books.
Wrapping up the weekend was the 4x400 meter relay team of Lidia Major, Kelia Bentham, Anna Mager and Shari Hurdman were able to add additional points to the Aztec’s total. They ran 3:39.44 on their way to a fourth-place finish placing them in a tie for the sixth fastest time in the program’s record book.
Up next those who qualify will head to the NCAA Indoor National Championship held at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas from March 13-14. The outdoor season will also officially begin next week with select members of the distance team heading to the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State, from March 6-7.
