IRVINE, Calif. – San Diego State men’s tennis captured the doubles point and earned victories on courts two and three in singles competition, but the Aztecs couldn’t push past UC Irvine, ultimately coming up short in a 4-3 decision on the road.
The Aztecs fall to a 2-8 record while the Anteaters improve to 1-4 on the season.
William Kleege and Aleksi Lofman picked up their second consecutive win on the top court in doubles, taking down Max Fardanesh and Tal Goodman 6-3. Brock Anderson and Denis Maijorov then clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Ruining Huang and Hiroki Sakagawa on court three. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli were down 5-4 against Sohrob Amiryavari and Alex Guajardo in the second spot when the point was captured.
The Anteaters tied things up with a victory on court four where Finn Willman was downed 6-0, 6-3 by Amiryavari. The Aztecs then regained the lead after Hazli took court two 7-5, 6-4 over Fardanesh.
UC Irvine clinched the match with three straight wins in the first, fifth and sixth spots. Kleege was bested 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 by Greg Gamal in the on the bottom court, Anderson fell 6-4, 6-4 to Huang on court five and Lofman was downed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 by Sakagawa on the top court.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice added one more point for the Aztecs, taking court three 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over Goodman.
Next up, the Aztecs will take on UC Davis and UC Riverside in a doubleheader on Feb. 26, beginning at noon.
