Aztecs Tripped Up 83-74 at Colorado State

Reese Dixon-Waters and Miles Byrd combined for 31 points to lead San Diego State men’s basketball in its road matchup at Colorado State on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the Aztecs came up short 83-74 against the Rams.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Reese Dixon-Waters and Miles Byrd combined for 31 points to lead San Diego State men’s basketball in its road matchup at Colorado State on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the Aztecs came up short 83-74 against the Rams.

San Diego State falls to 18-8 overall and 12-4 in the Mountain West while Colorado State improves to 8-8 in conference play and 17-10 overall.

Byrd had 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Dixon-Waters put up 16 points, two rebounds and one steal to lead the Aztecs. It’s the 19th double-figure game for Dixon-Waters this season and the 15th for Byrd.

Freshman Elzie Harrington, who has been out with an injury for the last six games, played 18 minutes and recorded three assists, two rebounds and one steal.

Colorado State had three players score in double figures. Jase Butler had 25 points, Carey Booth put up 22 and Brandon Rechsteiner added 16.

Jeremiah Oden opened the scoring with a mid-range jumper at the 17:35 mark, followed by a made three by Byrd 20 seconds later.

The Aztecs took a 14-9 lead at the 9:58 mark after Sean Newman Jr. drained a three and Magoon Gwath hit a free throw. The Rams then went on a 20-4 run in the following six minutes, grabbing a 29-18 advantage with 3:26 left in the first half. Dixon-Waters responded with a triple and Pharaoh Compton scored four in the final minute, and the Aztecs entered the break down 38-25.  

The Rams held on to the lead for the remainder of the game. The Aztecs cut it to seven on three occasions, but couldn’t get within two possessions and the Rams ultimately won 83-74.
