The Aztecs are 2-7 on the season following a gritty 4-3 win over Utah last Saturday. Of their nine matches played, seven have been on the road and three have been against top 20 opponents. Their victory over Utah was their first since Jan. 11 when the Aztecs swept UC San Diego 4-0.

UC Irvine enters the matchup 0-4, most recently falling 4-0 against No. 21 USC on the road. Facing three ranked opponents, the anteaters also came up short 7-0 at No. 12 UCLA, 6-1 against Grand Canyon and 6-1 at No. 11 San Diego.

This will be the 25th meeting of the two programs. San Diego State leads the all-time series 15-9, but UC Irvine took the last contest 4-3 in 2025.

Last time out, the Aztecs captured the doubles point and earned victories on courts one, two and four in singles play on their way to a 4-3 win over the Utes, led by Aleksi Lofman who clinched both the doubles point and the match for the Aztecs in the top spots. In doubles competition, Lofman paired up with freshman William Kleege, taking down Dante Teramo and Balthazar Huss 7-6 (7-2) to take the first point of the match after Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli cruised to a 6-1 victory over Emmett Potter and Charles Frey on court two. Hazli grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lorenzo Esquici in the second spot in singles while Gonzalez Fitzmaurice defeated Huss 7-5, 6-2 on court four. Lofman then clinched the win with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Teramo. Lofman’s performance earned him Mountain West Player of the Week.

Following Sunday’s match, the team will return to the Aztec Tennis Center for a doubleheader, taking on UC Davis at noon, followed by UC Riverside at 3 p.m. PT.
