SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis captured the doubles point and pulled out victories on courts one, two and four in singles competition to take down the Utes in a gritty 4-3 win at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Aztecs improve to 2-7 while Utah falls to 3-4 on the season.
“I’m proud of the guys for a very good team win today,” said Head Coach Gene Carswell. “We’re slowly getting guys back from illness and injury, and we’re looking forward to good things to come in the coming weeks.”
The Aztecs earned the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli first cruised to a 6-1 victory over Emmett Potter and Charles Frey on court two. The top and bottom courts came down to the wire, but William Kleege and Aleksi Lofman were able to hold off the Utes with a 7-6 (7-2) win in the first spot. Lars Johann and Denis Maijorov were all tied up at 6-6 against Lorenzo Esquici and AJ Deem on court three when the point was captured.
Hazli extended the lead for the Aztecs, taking a 6-2, 6-1 win over Esquici in the second spot. Utah got on the board with a victory on court three, where Finn Willman was bested 6-3, 6-2.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice added the third point for the Scarlet and Black. After outlasting Huss in a 7-5 first set victory, the senior rolled to a 6-2 win in the second.
Simeon Terziev took court five for Utah, defeating Brock Anderson 6-3, 7-5, bringing the match score to 3-2. Lofman then clinched the victory for the Aztecs, earning his first win on the top court this season. The junior downed Teramo 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
After opting to play out the final match, Frey added one last point for the Utes, taking court six 7-5, 4-6, [10-8] over Maijorov.
Next up, the Aztecs head to UC Irvine for a 1 p.m. matchup on Feb. 22.
