Sierra Tallman Named MW Freshman of the Week
SAN DIEGO – San Diego State swimmer Sierra Tallman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week after helping the Aztecs sweep a pair of double dual meets at home on Jan. 2 and Jan. 5. The announcement was made Tuesday by the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With her award, Tallman gives the Aztecs their first MW weekly honor of the season.
Across two meets, Tallman captured three individual event titles that counted towards SDSU’s team scores and contributed to one second-place relay finish, helping the Scarlet and Black extend its winning streak to 84 consecutive dual meets dating back to Jan. 8, 2018, a span of eight years.
In the Aztecs’ victories over Pepperdine (162-128) and Cal State East Bay (183-91) on Monday, Tallman captured the 200 freestyle crown with a collegiate-fast clocking of 1:51.33, before winning the 500 freestyle with a personal-best time of 5:04.66 in her inaugural appearance in the event as a collegian.
Tallman later anchored SDSU’s 400 freestyle “B” relay team that placed second with a combined effort of 3:31.70.
In the Aztecs’ wins over Vanderbilt (146-107) and San Diego (153-132), Tallman emerged triumphant in the 200 butterfly after completing a swim of 2:04.06. The Santa Barbara, California, native also logged the second-fast time in the 100 butterfly with a season-best clocking of 55.88, though her result was scored as an exhibition.
Likewise, Tallman recorded the second-best performance in the 200 individual medley later that same meet with a time of 2:05.84, which was deemed an exhibition as well, with the Scarlet and Black opening an insurmountable lead on the team scoreboard.
Tallman and the rest of the San Diego State swimming delegation will return to the competition pool on Friday, Jan. 23, when they play host to the University of San Diego, starting at 2 p.m. PT.
