SEATTLE, WASH -- San Diego State Track & Field’s distance team made the journey up north to Dempsey Indoor to compete in the UW Invitational. The Aztecs contingent consisted of 10 athletes who primarily raced in the 800-meter run, including a pair of freshmen who made their first ever appearances in a collegiate track and field meet.
Leading the way for the Aztecs in the 800-meters was the underclassmen duo of Sara Jones and Ginger Oberg. Oberg submitted the fastest time of the day for San Diego State finishing the race with a final time of 2:12.83. She secured a third-place finish in her heat as well. Meanwhile, Jones not only was the second fastest Aztec of the day with a time of 2:12.88 but she secured a first-place finish in her heat. It would also be close to a six second personal best for Jones.
While Jones claimed a first-place finish, Karina Janik and Isabella Fauria were able to bring home second place finishes in their respective heats as well. Janik, who competed in last week’s MLK Invitational, took second place in her heat thanks to a 2:13.60 showing that was less than a second off a personal best. Fauria also took second place in her heat by setting a new personal best time of 2:14.09. Elliana Lomeli made her collegiate debut and was able to take fourth place in her heat to the tune of a 2:15.16 mark.
San Diego State will be returning to Dempsey Indoor tomorrow to compete in the Mile City meet. Eight Aztecs will be scheduled to race the mile with the first heat beginning at 9:00 a.m. PT.
