Four Aztecs Advance to 1-Meter Finals at Lumberjack Invite

San Diego State advanced four divers to the finals of 1-meter springboard competition at the Lumberjack Invitational on Friday to highlight the first wave of action for the Aztecs in Flagstaff, Arizona.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – San Diego State advanced four divers to the finals of 1-meter springboard competition at the Lumberjack Invitational on Friday to highlight the first wave of action for the Aztecs at Wall Aquatic Center.

Flagstaff native Alina Skrocki led the SDSU contingent with a sixth-place effort after recording a combined 532.45 points for the day. The Aztec junior climbed one spot in the standings from the preliminary round, where she tallied 268.75 points to surpass an NCAA zone qualifying standard (265 pts).

Likewise, fellow classmate Isabella Gomez eclipsed an NCAA zone qualifying mark in the opening session with 273.75 points but tumbled two places on the leaderboard into the seventh position during the finals, totaling 529.70 points overall.

Finishing just behind Gomez was Belen Cano, who completed the event in eighth place with an aggregate of 523.75 points to give the Scarlet and Black its third top 10 competitor on Friday.  The Aztec freshman racked up 263.70 points in the preliminaries but was unable to gain ground on the leaders and remained in the eighth spot.

Elsewhere, Meja Palmer combined for 457.10 points to finish 17th overall, highlighted by a mark of 244.85 in the opening session, where she was slotted 13th.

Arizona’s Zara Joy Ayazi (591.10) captured the event title, followed by a pair of competitors from Northern Arizona in Mackenna Stocker (569.00) and Grace Wesche (568.40), while New Mexico State’s Mira Tinani (549.40) and NAU’s Margaret Wesche (542.55) rounded out the top five.

The SDSU delegation also included Sophia Hineline, who completed the preliminaries in the 21st position with 227.40 points, followed by Keira Kuderka (26th – 218.30) and Lucy Chavez (29th – 213.85).

The Lumberjack Diving Invitational resumes on Friday for San Diego State with the preliminaries and finals of the 3-meter springboard, starting at 10:30 a.m. MT/9:30 a.m. PT.

The Aztecs are battling divers from Northern Arizona, Arizona, Colorado Mesa, Idaho, New Mexico, New Mexico State and UNLV.
