PHOENIX, Ariz. – San Diego State came up a point short in a 70-69 score on Wednesday night at Grand Canyon.
San Diego State (13-5, 7-1 Mountain West) remains atop the conference standings ahead of Saturday’s contest at UNLV.
Grand Canyon (12-6, 5-2 MW) will seek to earn another win at Fresno State on Saturday night.
Elzie Harrington scored the first four field goals for the Aztecs, the first three on layups. With the Aztecs trailing by two with ten minutes left in the first half, Pharaoh Compton made a layup before jumpers from Reese Dixon-Waters and Harrington gave SDSU a 22-20 lead at the eight-minute mark. Taj DeGourville made a go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in the half as the Aztecs took a 37-35 advantage into halftime.
The Aztecs fell behind by double digits in the second half but battled all the way back, taking the lead on a Tae Simmons putback with 53 seconds remaining that capped a 20-7 run. A key defensive stop bled the clock into the final ten seconds before the officials whistled a foul when Grand Canyon’s Makaih Williams was driving with two seconds left. Williams made both free throws to pull the Lopes in front with two ticks left.
Harrington (16 points), Dixon-Waters (12 points) and BJ Davis (11 points) each scored in double figures for San Diego State.
Grand Canyon was led by Jaden Henley and Williams (17 points each) and Brian Moore Jr added a dozen points.
