SANTA CLARA, Calif. – San Diego State men’s tennis traveled to Santa Clara, Calif. for the final day of its three-match swing in the Bay Area on Sunday, where the Aztecs took the doubles point, as well as a victory on court two, but ultimately fell 5-2 to the Broncos.
The Aztecs move to 1-4 on the season while the Broncos improve to 2-0.
San Diego State took the first lead of the match, earning wins on courts two and three to capture the doubles point. Imran Daniel Hazli and Lars Johann first took down Valentin Faure and Luca Lemaitre 6-1 in the second spot before Brock Anderson and Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Ferran Redza and Tiago Boschmans on court three. The top court matchup between John Kim/Luca Bluett and William Kleege/Denis Maijorov was left unfinished, 5-4 in the Broncos’ favor.
Santa Clara responded with two straight wins in singles competition, taking courts one and five. In the fifth spot, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was tripped up 6-2, 6-1 by Faure, while Aleksi Lofman fell 6-2, 6-3 to Alexander Eriksson on the first court.
Hazli tied things up for the Aztecs, putting a second point on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lemaitre on court two.
Lukas Maskow gave the advantage back to the Broncos, taking court four 6-2, 6-4 over Johann. Kim then clinched the match for Santa Clara on court three where Finn Willman was bested 6-3, 6-4.
The teams chose to play the sixth court through, which Bluett won 6-3, 3-6, [10-7] over Anderson.
Next up, San Diego State returns to The Mesa for its home opener against Loyola Marymount on Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
