Aztecs Downed 4-1 by No. 15 California

Lars Johann led the Aztecs, earning a victory on court four, but the Scarlet and Black ultimately fell 4-1 to the Bears.

BERKELEY, Calif. – San Diego State men’s tennis competed in the second of its three Bay Area dual matches of the weekend, taking on No. 15 California in Berkeley on Friday evening. Lars Johann led the Aztecs, earning a victory on court four, but the Scarlet and Black ultimately fell 4-1 to the Bears.

California clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Imran Daniel Hazli and Johann were bested 6-0 by No. 55 Tiago Silva and Timofey Stepanov on the top court. William Kleege and Denis Maijorov then took down Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and Andrea Meduri on court two by a score of 6-4. The point came down to the third court matchup between Brock Anderson/Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Bernardo Munk Mesa/Paris Pouatcha, which the Bears took 6-4.

California took a 3-0 lead over the Aztecs after earning victories on courts three and five. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lechno-Wasiutynski in the third spot while Anderson was tripped up 6-2, 6-1 by Mesa in the fifth.

Johann put San Diego State on the board with a win over Meduri, taking court four by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Leonardo Cattaneo clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maijorov on court six.

Finn Willman’s top court matchup against Silva was left unfinished at 6-2, 4-2 in Silva’s favor. Hazli fell 6-2 to Stepanov in the first set on court two. The second set was tied at 3-3 when the match was called.

The Aztecs next face Santa Clara at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday.
