STANFORD, Calif. – San Diego State men’s tennis traveled to the Bay Area to kick off the first of its three-match swing on Thursday, playing at fourth-ranked Stanford. After dropping the doubles point, the Aztecs battled in singles competition, but came up short in a 4-1 defeat.
The Cardinal took an early lead, earning victories on courts one and two in doubles play. Lars Johann and Imran Daniel Hazli were neck-and-neck with Alex Razeghi and Hudson Rivera, but were tripped up 7-5 in the top court matchup. Denis Maijorov and William Kleege were then downed by Jagger Leach and Mark Krupkin 6-2 in the second spot. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Brock Anderson were behind 5-4 against Luke Tusher and Alex Chang when the point was clinched.
Stanford earned the second point of the match after Johann came up short 6-4, 6-2 against Leach on court four. The Aztecs responded, getting on the board with a victory in the sixth spot, where Maijorov took down Tusher by a score of 6-2, 6-5. After a tough first set that went to a tiebreak, Finn Willman fell 7-6, 6-0 to No. 67 Chang on the top court. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was then bested 7-5, 6-4 by Razeghi on the third court to clinch the match for the Cardinal.
On court two, Hazli took his first set 7-6 over Rivera, but was tripped up 6-2 in the second. The third set was left unfinished at 2-1 in Rivera’s favor. Over on the fifth court, Anderson was just shy of a first-set victory, but fell 7-6 to Krupkin. The Aztec led 6-5 in the second set.
The Aztecs next face No. 15 California at 4 p.m. PT tomorrow.
