LOS ANGELES – San Diego State junior Isabella Gomez finished second in the platform event on Sunday to lead the Aztec delegation at the Bruin Diving Invitational on the campus of UCLA.
A transfer from New Mexico, Gomez registered an aggregate score of 519.55, surpassing an NCAA zone qualifying standard in both rounds, including a mark of 270.40 in preliminaries, to land in the runner-up spot in a field of 12 competitors behind Eden Cheng of host UCLA (659.00).
With her performance, Gomez was one of three SDSU divers to advance to Sunday’s final, joining fellow classmate Alina Skrocki and freshman Belen Cano.
Skrocki placed seventh overall after compiling a two-round total of 474.15, including a tally of 252.50 in the preliminary session, which eclipsed an NCAA zone qualifying mark.
In her first platform event after joining the Aztecs earlier this month, Cano was slotted in 11th in finals with an overall tally of 435.95 points after carrying over a score of 220.90 from the previous round.
A trio of SDSU freshmen rounded out the SDSU contingent on Sunday, including Sophia Hineline, who placed 22nd in preliminaries with a total of 204.80 points, followed closely by Meja Palmer (23rd, 203.20) and Lucy Chavez (26th, 193.30).
The San Diego State swim and dive program returns to action on Friday, Jan. 23, when the full squad convenes for a dual meet vs. the University of San Diego at Aztec Aquaplex. First swim is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the Scarlet and Black conducting Senior Day festivities prior to the meet. Admission is free.
