Aztecs Wrap Up Weekend at Riverside Collegiate Invite
San Diego State divers Alina Skrocki and Isabella Gomez surpassed NCAA zone qualifying marks in platform competition on Saturday at the Riverside Collegiate Invitational in Los Angeles, California.
LOS ANGELES – A total of five San Diego State divers competed in the platform event on Saturday, as the Aztecs wrapped up the Riverside Collegiate Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center on the UCLA campus.
Highlighting the day’s action for the Scarlet and Black were Isabella Gomez and Alina Skrocki, who both surpassed NCAA Zone qualifying marks (225.0) for the second time this season.
A junior transfer from New Mexico, Gomez claimed the top spot in the preliminary round with a score of 268.10 but tumbled into third place after finishing with 238.10 points in the finals.
Despite compiling more points in the finals, Skrocki experienced a drop in the standings as well, slipping one spot into the fifth position after collecting 235.15 points in the second session. Earlier in the preliminaries, the SDSU junior tallied a fourth-place score of 222.85.
Making her first platform appearance as a collegian, Lucy Chavez climbed from 10th place into the sixth slot after totaling 215.90 points in the finals. Previously, the Aztec freshman amassed a score of 193.30 in the morning round.
The San Diego State delegation included two additional freshmen in Sophia Hineline and Meja Palmer. Hineline finished eighth in the finals with a total of 204.85 points, while Palmer was slotted 10th with a score of 189.85.
Host UCLA featured the top two finishers on Saturday, as Laura Fisher (254.70) claimed the No. 1 spot, followed by teammate Molly Brascia (244.55). Rounding out the top five was Bella Reynolds (236.20) of California Baptist, who took fourth.
The Riverside Invitational was originally slated for the Riverside Aquatics Center at Riverside City College; however, on-going facility maintenance necessitated the move.
Following a break for the holidays, the San Diego State swim and dive program returns to the competition pool with a full squad on Friday, Jan. 2, when it plays host to Vanderbilt and San Diego in a double dual meet at Aztec Aquaplex. First race at SDSU’s home opener is slated for 10 a.m. PT, and admission is free.
