SAN DIEGO – After their fourth win at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, San Diego State’s Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley are the 2025 ITA Conference Masters Doubles Champions, punching their ticket to the NCAA Doubles Championships in Orlando, Fla. later this month.
The senior and freshman duo competed in the ITA Masters semifinals on Saturday, taking down Furman’s Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren 6-2, 6-3 to secure a podium finish and a postseason bid. The other doubles finalists out of Virgina opted to forfeit Sunday’s final matchup, making the Aztecs champions.
“That was a big win with everything on the line,” said Head Coach Nico Vinel. “I’m very happy for them and I’m excited to see how far they go. The game style that they have together is perfect. We have one who loves playing at the net and moves very well, and someone in the back who can pound the ball. They both have great returns and they put a lot of pressure on opponents. They just have great chemistry.”
“This is my senior year, so this means so much,” says Chan. “I made it a goal to make NCAAs, and I’m so grateful to be here and play with [Vessa]. It means a lot to me.”
“This is very exciting for me, since I’m a freshman,” Turley said. "’Ecstatic’ is the word I’d use. Being able to qualify for the NCAAs, especially playing with Jo-Yee. I think we just work as an amazing pair together. We both move very well at the net and serve well, so I think that made the difference in this tournament.”
The Aztecs will head to Orlando for the NCAA Championships, which begin Nov. 19.
The remaining Aztecs continued play at the SDSU Fall Classic on Saturday, combining for four wins on the day. In doubles, Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache earned a 6-3 victory over Saint Mary’s Iman Khan and Sofia Daryaie while Teja Tirunelveli and Vesa Gjinaj took their match 6-3 over Madison Weekley and Elif Gunal, also out of Saint Mary’s. In singles, Clemens won 6-1, 6-2 over Colorado State’s Diana Lizarazo and Gjinaj took down Leyla Tozin 6-4, 7-5.
The final day of the Fall Classic will get underway at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
