SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley are on to the doubles round of 16 at the ITA Conference Masters after earning a first round victory Thursday evening. The Aztecs are on the hunt for a podium finish, which would earn them a bid to the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla. later this month.
The Scarlet and Black duo faced North Florida’s Isabel Oliveira and Laurie Barendse in the round of 32. The first set was a back-and-forth battle, but Chan and Turley overcame an early deficit to take the set 7-5. The Aztecs gained momentum in the second, cruising to a 6-1 win and earning their spot in Friday’s competition.
The senior and freshman will return to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center, where they will take on the winner of Lara Bakhaya/Sofia Maria Barbulescu of Richmond University vs. Aya Ishii/Maria Costano of Tarleton State.
The quarterfinals will follow, set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
