SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (3-2) fell to Santa Clara (4-2) in front of 3,707 fans in their annual Field Trip game Wednesday.

The Aztecs struggled mightily from the field, but especially from three, shooting 24% from the field and going 1-for-29 from three. SDSU entered the game averaging the sixth most three-pointers per game in the nation.

“Congratulations to Santa Clara on a really good game,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “I thought they executed their game plan, our threes weren’t going in, and we didn’t give ourselves a chance with the type of defense we played in the first half.”

Nat Martinez and Kaelyn Hamilton led the Aztecs with 12 points each, while Bailey Barnhard had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Aztecs made just two field goals in the first quarter, and a 19-2 Bronco run spanning the first and second quarters gave them an insurmountable lead.

SDSU outscored Santa Clara in the second half, and forced 10 Bronco turnovers, but still struggled from three-point range.

Santa Clara’s Maia Jones led the Broncos with a career-high 25 points.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Aztecs entered the game making over 10 threes per game but made just one Wednesday.
