SAN DIEGO – Fueled by an offensive explosion in the second and third quarters, the San Diego State women’s basketball team (2-1) raced past CSUN (2-1) 91-70 inside Viejas Arena Wednesday evening.
The Aztecs outscored the Matadors 65-26 across the second and third quarters while making 11 three-pointers to put the game out of reach after a slow start.
“CSUN gave it to us in the first quarter, but I was happy to see how we responded to adversity in the second and third quarter,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game.
Three Aztecs scored 15 or more points, led by Kennedy Lee’s career-high 24 points. Nala Williams scored 19 on 8-for-10 shooting while dishing out six assists and Naomi Panganiban had 15.
Lee made seven three-pointers with five of them coming in the second quarter. Her previous career-bests were 18 points and three three-pointers.
“We knew Kennedy could shoot like that,” Terry-Hutson explained. “We knew she was going to have pick-and-pop opportunities, and it was great to see her take advantage.”
The Aztecs made just two of their first 10 shots but never got down by more than six because they kept getting to the free throw line.
“We got them in foul trouble early and told them to keep attacking until our shots started falling,” Terry-Hutson said.
The shots certainly started to fall in the second quarter as the Aztecs went on an 18-0 run to grab the lead. At one point, Lee made three straight threes and ended the second quarter with five three-pointers.
SDSU kept the pressure on in the third quarter, beginning the second half on a 17-3 lead to put the game out of reach.
STAT OF THE GAME
Kennedy Lee made seven three-pointers, which is tied for the second most ever by an Aztec in a game.
THE NOTE I
This is the first time the Aztecs have scored 90 or more points in back-to-back games since the 1991-92 season.
THE NOTE II
The Aztecs have made 10 or more three-pointers in all three of their games so far this season. They accomplished that just four times last year.
