BOISE, Idaho – The fourth-seeded San Diego State women’s soccer team (8-4-6, 4-2-4 MW) opens the Mountain West Championships on Sunday night at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT in the quarterfinals against fifth-seeded Colorado State (10-3-5, 4-2-4 MW). The match, and entire tournament, is being broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
Last week, the Aztecs needed a win over New Mexico to earn a spot in the conference tournament and trailed Thursday’s match 1-0 at halftime. Mia Lane evened the score on a penalty kick in the 57th minute. In the 84th minute, Emma Fuller passed to Alexis Leath in front of the goal, who kicked the ball into the back of the net to send SDSU to Boise. Leath garnered Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week accolades for the goal.
This is SDSU’s 25th tournament appearance out of 26 Mountain West Championships. The Aztecs have made it every year except 2018 and hold a 21-14-7 record all time in tournament matches. San Diego State is 7-4-2 in the Quarterfinal round and 2-3-2 when facing Colorado State. The Aztecs are 2-5-1 as the No. 4 seed and 4-1-1 when facing the fifth seed.
Colorado State won its first six matches of the season and earned a No. 25-ranking on September 9. The Rams are 2-0-2 in their last four matches. CSU beat San Jose State, tied San Diego State, beat Nevada and tied Wyoming.
San Diego State has a 9-1-3 record against Colorado State all-time with every meeting coming since 2013. SDSU is 2-0-2 in the last four meetings and won 1-0 last season. The teams tied 2-2 this year in Fort Collins on October 23.
With a win, San Diego State would face top-seeded host Boise State at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT on Wednesday. The entire tournament is being held at Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho and streamed on the Mountain West Network.
