ERIN HILLS, Wisc. -- San Diego State’s Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) sank a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-5, 637-yard 18th hole to earn medalist honors at the Marquette Intercollegiate on Tuesday. It was the second career victory for Kowack, who led the Aztecs to a runner-up finish.
Kowack finished at 2-under-par 214 for the tournament, one shot ahead of Florida’s Jack Turner (-1). Kowack and Turner were the only two golfers out of the 90-man field to shoot under par on the par-72, 7,551-yard Erin Hills Golf Course. Kowack was at 1-over through his first seven holes, but he birdied four of the final 11 holes to finish with a 3-under 69. Turner shot a 68 on Tuesday.
Collectively, SDSU finished second out of 14 teams at 23-over 887, three shots behind Clemson (+20) and three shots ahead of No. 10 Florida (+26) and No. 16 Texas A&M (+26). San Diego State’s 2-under 286 in today’s final round was matched only by Florida.
Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 2-over 74 today and finished tied for 10th at +6. He opened with a birdie on the par-5, 552-yard first hole, and birdied the par-3, 190-yard 16th and the par-4, 481-yard 17th, while making seven bogeys in between.
Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) carded a final-round 71 and moved up 22 places into a tie for 40th, finishing at +14. He birdied three of his final five holes and had four overall in the round against three bogeys.
Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied for 43rd at +15 following an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Sampson eagled the par-5, 576-yard seventh hole, had two bogeys and 15 pars.
Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) came in a tie for 55th at +18, while Teddy Gardner (San Francisco) came in 90th (+46).
The Aztecs will kick off their spring championship season, Jan. 26-28, at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, California.
