SAN DIEGO – GRAMMY-nominated Common Kings will play at the River Block Party at Snapdragon Stadium before San Diego State’s football homecoming game against Wyoming on Saturday, Nov. 1, which was announced Wednesday by SDSU and Common Kings.
Common Kings have transcended their Polynesian reggae roots to achieve pop crossover success since releasing their first music almost 15 years ago. More than a band of musicians, Common Kings are a family, a lifestyle, a community, a brother and sisterhood, having grown up together in California’s Orange County and attended college together. Consisting of Samoan-born Hawaiian lead singer Sasualei “Jr. King” Maliga and Hawaii-raised Samoan guitarist Taumata “Mata” Grey; Fiji-born bassist Ivan “Uncle Lui” Kirimaua, and L.A.-born Tongan drummer Jerome “Big Rome” Taito, the band has toured with Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony and CeeLo as well as headlining their own shows and music festivals around the country and world.
Common Kings was nominated for a GRAMMY for its full-length album “Lost in Paradise” in 2017 for Best Reggae Album. Common Kings’ island rhythms are as seductive as a lazy ocean breeze, with a narrative that is an All-American story with a tropical twist.
Common Kings will play following the Warrior Walk on Saturday, Nov. 1, which will be followed by the Aztecs’ game against Wyoming at 4 p.m. PT. The Common Kings concert is one of many festivities that will take place at Snapdragon Stadium before the game. It is also Homecoming & Heroes Appreciation.
