SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis completed day three of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday, hosted at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs tallied five wins on the day, with Jo-Yee Chan (singles, doubles), Vessa Turley (doubles) and Ninon Martinache (singles) advancing to the quarterfinals.
Vessa Turley and Jo-Yee Chan earned a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinals after posting two wins on Saturday. The duo took down Hawaii’s Makeilah Nepomuceno and Johannah Magenta Galindo 8-3 before defeating Chloe Schwarz and Emilie Lugon of UC Irvine by the same score.
The two Aztecs will compete again on Sunday morning beginning at 9 a.m. PT.
Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache also made it through the round of 32 after earning an 8-6 victory over Long Beach State’s Paulina Franco and Cecelia Costa, but the pair fell 8-4 to Krisha Mahendran and Jana Hossam Salah out of USC in the round of 16.
Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul cruised to an 8-1 win over UC Santa Barbara’s Carla Pacot and Katarina Vayser in their first match, but ultimately came up short 8-4 against Nicole West and Angela Ho from CSUN.
Chan and Martinache each won their respective round of 16 matches in straight sets to advance to the singles quarterfinals. Chan downed Loyola Marymount’s Lidia Gonzalez 6-3, 6-1 while Martinache earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over teammate Teja Tirunelveli.
Sunday’s singles competition will get underway at 10 a.m.
