All Aztecs Advance at ITA Southwest Regionals

All eight Aztecs are moving on in the main draw at the ITA Women’s Southwest Regional Championships after combining for 11 wins on day two.

SAN DIEGO – All eight Aztecs are moving on in the main draw at the ITA Women’s Southwest Regional Championships after combining for 11 wins on day two.  

Three of four doubles teams will represent San Diego State in the round of 32 on Saturday. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache punched their ticket with a commanding 8-1 win over UC Riverside’s Chloe Vu and Julianna Galindo. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul took down Jessica MacCallum and Natalie Lynch of Cal Poly by a score of 8-4 to earn their spot. Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley will join their teammates in the round of 32 after a first-round bye.

The Aztecs will be back in action in the round of 32 on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT.

Teja Tirunelveli and Vesa Gjinaj came up short on Friday morning, falling 8-3 to Arizona’s Maria Garcia and Zoya Chulak.

Six Aztecs made it through the singles round of 32, with three then advancing to the round of 16.

Chan posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Angela Ho out of CSUN before taking down UC San Diego’s Olivia Allegre 6-4, 6-3. Martinache took her first match 6-4, 6-4 over Grand Canyon’s Hams Metwali prior to a 6-2, 7-5 win against Charlotte Keitel of San Diego. Tirunelveli was the final Aztec to advance through Friday’s singles competition, downing Grand Canyon’s Dania Deaifi 7-5, 6-4 and UC Irvine’s Emilie Lugon, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The three Aztecs will next compete in the round of 16 at 11:30 a.m.

Turley took her round of 32 match 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 over UC Riverside’s Ramey Yu, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to Krisha Mahendran out of USC. Alogo earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Hawaii’s Grete Gull before coming up short in a 6-1, 6-4 matchup against USC’s Imogen Haddad. Clemens bested Diana De Simone of Long Beach State by a score of 6-0, 7-5, but fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to UC Santa Barbara’s Ekua Youri.
