Aztecs Advance at ITA Southwest Regional Championships

San Diego State men’s tennis completed day one of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday, posting three wins on the day.

TEMPE, Ariz. – San Diego State men’s tennis completed day one of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday, posting three wins on the day.

Kicking off the six-day competition with the singles round of 64, William Kleege tabbed a three-set victory over UC Riverside’s Michael Chang, taking down the Highlander 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 to advance to the round of 32. The freshman then fell 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 to UC Irvine's Max Fardanesh.

Sophomore Denis Maijorov also appeared in the opening round, but came up short 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Tristan Messerli of Loyola Marymount.

After earning a bye through the round of 64, Imran Daniel Hazli and Brock Anderson each claimed victories in their lone matches of the day. Hazli downed Arizona’s Alejandro Arcila by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) while Anderson earned a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win over David Adamson of UC San Diego.

The Aztecs will return to action on Friday, beginning with doubles at 11 a.m. PT.
