SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team fired a 7-under-par 281 for the second-best second round to move up four places into a tie for sixth at the Sahalee Players Championship on Saturday in Sammamish, Washington. The Aztecs, who were tied for 10th after an opening round of 18-over 306, are tied for sixth overall with tournament host Washington at 11-over 587 on the par-72, 7,003-yard Sahalee Country Club.
No. 6 Arizona State was the only school to shoot better in the second round than SDSU, carding a 11-under 277 which moved it into the lead through 36 holes at 4-under 572. No. 3 Texas is second at even-par, while No. 19 Pepperdine (+3), USGA Junior National Team (+5) and No. 24 UCLA (+10) round out the top 5. Behind San Diego State (+11) and Washington (+11), are No. 15 North Carolina (+12), No. 22 Arizona (+12), No. 4 Florida (+19), Northwestern (+24) and Oregon (+28).
Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is in a tie for 13th place out of 72 golfers at 1-over 145 to lead the Aztecs following rounds of 75 and 70. Kowack’s second-round 70 featured an eagle on the par-5, 546-yard 11th hole, four birdies and four bogeys.
Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), meanwhile, also shot five shots better from his first round (76) to his second (71) and sits in a tie for 27th at 3-over 147. Takis sank six birdies against five bogeys in the second round.
Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is in a tie for 34th at +5 after rebounding from a 79 and a 70 in the second round. His 70 consisted of seven birdies and five bogeys.
Making his SDSU debut, Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) is in a tie for 40th at +6 following rounds of 76 and 74, while Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 50th at 8-over 152 (82-70). Competing as an individual and making his San Diego State debut, Grant Lester (Washington D.C.) is tied for 66th at +15.
Four players are tied for the lead at 3-under 141, including Brady Siravo (Pepperdine), Daniel Bennett (Texas), Mahanth Chirravuri (Pepperdine) and Michael Mjaaseth (Arizona State). Washington’s Finn Koelle is a shot back in solo fifth at 2-under.
Sunday’s final round gets underway at 7 a.m. PT.
