Harry Takis Ties for Second as No. 25 Aztecs Finish Fifth at Sahalee Players Championship

Harry Takis fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of the Sahalee Players Championship to tie for second place and help the 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team finish fifth in a loaded 12-team field on Sunday in Sammamish, Washington.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of the Sahalee Players Championship to tie for second place and help the 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team finish fifth in a loaded 12-team field on Sunday in Sammamish, Washington.

Takis, who opened with rounds of 76 and 71 on Saturday on the par-72, 7,003-yard Sahalee Country Club, tied with Daniel Bennett of Texas for second out of 72 players at 2-under 214, just a shot back of medalist Brady Siravo (-3) of Pepperdine. Takis easily had the best final round at 67, three shots better than UCLA’s Kyle An and Texas’ Luke Potter, and was one of only six players to shoot under-par on Sunday when the average score was 76.40. For the tournament, Takis was one of only five players to finish under-par as Tyler Watts (USGA Junior National Team) and Michael Mjaaseth (Arizona State) tied for fourth at -1.

Starting on the first hole, Takis birdied the par-5, 509-yard second, the par-4, 415-yard third and the par-4, 444-yard eighth to card a 33 for the front nine. After bogeying the par-4, 401-yard 10th, Takis birdied the par-4, 458-yard 12th, the par-4, 377-yard 14th and the par-4, 417-yard 15th before recording pars on his final three holes. It was the third career runner-up finish for the 2025 Mountain West Freshman of the Year, all of which have come over his last six tournaments dating back to last season.

As a team, SDSU, which is ranked 25th in the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason DI Coaches Poll, came in solo fifth at 18-over 882 after a 7-over 295 today. San Diego State was tied for 10th after yesterday’s morning round following a 306 but came roaring back with a 7-under 281 in the afternoon to enter today in a tie for sixth. No. 6 Arizona State (+3) defeated No. 3 Texas (+4) by a stroke to capture the team title, while No. 24 UCLA (+9) and the USGA Junior National Team (+15) were the only other teams to beat the Aztecs. Behind SDSU was No. 15 North Carolina (+21), No. 19 Pepperdine (+22), No. 22 Arizona (+24), Washington (+25), No. 4 Florida (+34), Northwestern (+45) and Oregon (+51).

Seniors Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 24th and 37th, respectively. Kowack shot a 5-over 77 to finish at +6 for the tournament, overcoming a disastrous 6-over start through six holes with two double bogeys and two bogeys by going 1-under over his final 12 holes, including birdies on the par-4, 421-yard seventh and the par-5, 535-yard 18th.

Chokprajakchat, who opened with an 82 in the morning yesterday before carding a 2-under 70 in the second round, finished at +10 for the tournament following a 2-over 74 today. He had a pair of birdies (par 5, 512-yard sixth and No. 14), two bogeys and a double bogey on the 12th.

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) and junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) each tied for 41st at 11-over 227, with Hirayama shooting a 77 today and Sampson signing for a 78.

Competing as an individual, Grant Lester (Washington D.C.) tied for 65th at +22.

San Diego State next competes at Utah’s Wohali Classic, Sept. 15-16, at Wohali Golf Club in Coalville, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City.
