Four Aztecs Advance at SoCal Championships

Jo-Yee Chan and Gloria Alogo each earned their bid to Saturday’s singles quarterfinal while Ninon Martinache and Vessa Turley advanced in doubles competition.

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis completed day two of the USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, with four Aztecs advancing in the main draw. Jo-Yee Chan and Gloria Alogo each earned their bid to Saturday’s singles quarterfinal while Ninon Martinache and Vessa Turley advanced in doubles competition.

Chan and Alogo both clinched their victories in straight sets. Chan took down USC’s Simone Kay by a score of 7-5, 6-2, and Alogo came out on top 7-5, 6-4 over Nevada’s Amahee Charrier.

Liisa Varul also made an appearance in the round of 16, but fell 6-3, 6-2 to Jana Hossam Salah out of USC.

In doubles play, Martinache and Turley picked up two victories on the day, beginning with a 6-4 win over Tulane’s Campbell Ricci and Leigh Van Zyl in the round of 16. The duo then punched their ticket to the semifinal after a dominant 6-0 victory against USC’s Eugenia Zozaya Menendez and Daniela Borruel in the quarterfinals.

After a first-round bye, Chan and Varul cruised to a 6-0 win over Seha Yu and Emilie Lugon of Fullerton. The Aztecs’ stay in the main draw came to an end after coming up short 6-3 to Nevada’s Silvia Maria Costache and Marlene Foerster.

Saturday’s competition is set to get underway at 9:45 a.m. PT, beginning with doubles, followed by singles at 10:30 a.m.
