SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis is gearing up to get its fall schedule underway, beginning Thursday at the USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of San Diego.
All eight Aztecs will compete in both singles and doubles. Freshman Vessa Turley, along with junior transfers Teja Tirunelveli and Jayna Clemens, will be making their debut in Scarlet and Black.
The opening day of the tournament will kick off with doubles competition, beginning at 9 a.m. PT. Gloria Alogo and Vesa Gjinaj will pair up in a match against Cal State Fullerton’s Madison and Chloe Schwarz, while Clemens and Tirunelveli face Summer Chandler and Micah Pierce of Tulane, and Ninon Martinache and Turley take on Grand Canyon’s Peyton Duckett and Hams Metwali. Jo-Yee Chan and Liisa Varul will take a first-round bye and begin their stay in the doubles draw on Friday morning.
In singles competition, Gjinaj, Tirunelveli and Turley will get going in their respective round of 64 matchups at 9:30 a.m. PT. Gjinaj will take on Nevada’s Petra Janigova, while Tirunelveli faces Silvia Maria Costache, also of the Wolfpack, and Turley competes against USD’s Kristina Nordikyan.
Martinache, Varul, Chan, Alogo and Clemens each earned a first-round bye and will begin play at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32.
