NORMAN, Okla. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team is ranked 25th in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) recently announced. The poll is voted on by 18 head coaches.
The Aztecs picked up 65 votes for 25th, seven behind No. 24 UCLA (72). Texas A&M is 20th with 113 points, while South Carolina (98), Arizona (97) and Georgia (93) round out the top 25. SDSU is just ahead of the others receiving votes, including Utah (60), SMU (57) and Wake Forest (42) among others. Oklahoma State sits atop the poll with 466 points and 15 first-place votes. Auburn is second with 424 points and one first-place votes, while Texas (406), Florida (391, one first-place vote) and Ole Miss (381, one first-place vote) round out the top 5.
The Aztecs are coming off another banner season that saw them win their fourth consecutive Mountain West championship and earn a spot in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where SDSU tied for seventh out of 14 teams, two spots from advancing to the NCAA Championship. Recently, former Aztec J.J. Spaun (2009-12) won the U.S. Open, June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club. Along with a pair of major wins last season by Xander Schauffele at the PGA Championship and The Open, a former SDSU golfer has won three of the last seven majors. Both Spaun and Schauffele will represent Team USA at the Ryder Cup next month. Recent San Diego State graduate Justin Hastings (2022-25), meanwhile, was the low amateur at the two of the three majors competed in in 2025, including the Masters and the U.S. Open.
SDSU returns three 2025 all-Mountain West golfers, including Chanachon Choprajakchat, Tyler Kowack and the 2025 MW Freshman of the Year Harry Takis.
The Aztecs open the season this weekend (Sept. 6-7) at the Sahalee Players at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.
