COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced the conference’s preseason poll on Wednesday. The league’s 13 head coaches voted on the poll, picking San Diego State to finish fourth. SDSU also had a trio of players named to the conference’s Watch List.
San Diego State has been predicted to finish outside the top two for just the second time in the last 16 years. The Aztecs also were picked fourth in 2019. That season, SDSU went 8-2-0 in conference play for a share of the regular season title and advanced to the championship match of the league tournament.
The top four teams in the order of finish (Utah State, Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State) are the same top four as last season’s preseason poll (in order: San Diego State, Utah State, Colorado State, Boise State) and are the four teams to make the Semifinals of the 2024 Mountain West Tournament, held on the SDSU Sports Deck. This year, Utah State led the voting with 128 points including six first place votes. Boise State (121 points, three first place votes), Colorado State (111 points, one first place vote) and the Aztecs (109 points, one first place vote) make up the top tier of the poll. Late newcomer Grand Canyon was picked fifth with 93 points, UNLV is sixth with 87 points and New Mexico slots in at seventh with 80 points and two first place votes. The conference is rounded out by Wyoming (59 points), Nevada (55 points), Colorado College (54 points), Fresno State (50 points), Air Force (44 points) and San Jose State (23 points).
Senior defender Grace Goins, who is the Aztecs’ leading returning scorer after scoring four goals last season, earned a spot on the conference Watch List once again after making the inaugural list last year. She is joined by juniors Alexys Ocampo and Katie Senn. Both players were injured for the bulk of the 2024 campaign with Ocampo appearing in the team’s first four matches. In 2023, Ocampo scored twice and assisted on six goals in 20 matches while Senn competed in 19 matches and tallied a pair of assists.
San Diego State will play tonight for the first time this season in an exhibition match against San Diego at 7 p.m. on the SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs’ regular season begins on Thursday, August 14, when SDSU hosts Texas Tech, also on the SDSU Sports Deck. Admission is free for all matches held on the Sports Deck and the Texas Tech match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
