SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team will open its 2025 campaign this week with a pair of 7 p.m. night matches on the SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs battle No. 25 Texas Tech on Thursday evening before taking on Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday night. The Mountain West Network will broadcast both matches.
San Diego State’s roster is led by senior defender Grace Goins, who is the team’s leading returning scorer after four goals last season. Goins has been selected to the Mountain West Watch List in each of the last two seasons. This year, she was joined on the list by juniors Alexys Ocampo and Katie Senn. While both players were injured last season, they combined for two goals and eight assists in 2023.
The Aztecs and Red Raiders played annually between 2016 and 2019. Texas Tech won by one goal in each of the first three matchups before winning by multiple goals in the final of the four matches.
In the last five seasons, San Diego State is 5-0 in season openers. The Aztecs won those matches by a combined score of 11-3 including last year’s 3-0 win against Cal State Bakersfield at Snapdragon Stadium, which was preceded by another shutout victory, 2-0 over Sacred Heart in 2023.
The Aztecs and Roadrunners have played twice, both resulting in 3-0 wins for SDSU. The first time came back on October 7, 2007, on the SDSU Sports Deck. The teams faced off once again in last year’s season opener at Snapdragon Stadium on August 15.
SDSU faces another tough test next week with a road match at current No. 7 Stanford on Thursday, August 21. That one will be streamed on ACC Network X ($). San Diego State wraps up the month of August with a match against UC San Diego at Snapdragon Stadium on August 30 at 7 p.m.
