SAN DIEGO – San Diego State head women’s soccer coach Mike Friesen has announced the hiring of Louis Hunt as an assistant coach. Hunt remains in America’s Finest City after coaching for San Diego Wave FC from 2021-24.

When San Diego Wave FC was founded in 2021, Hunt was brought in as the Head of Goalkeeping and one of two staff members with the title of assistant coach. He held those roles with the team for its inaugural season in 2022 as well as the 2023 and 2024 campaigns. The team made the Semifinals of the playoffs in each of its first two seasons and won the Challenge Cup title in his final season, 2024.

In addition to his work with the Wave, Hunt also has experience coaching for US Women’s National Teams. He has served as a coach and a scout for the US Youth National Teams (U15-U20 age groups) since 2015. Hunt has also recently taken over the position of Goalkeeper Coach with the US Women’s National U23 team.

From 2013-15, Hunt served as an assistant coach at DII school Cal Poly Pomona, working with the keepers. In his second season with the Broncos, Hunt guided the team to a 15-6-1 record, the second-best in program history. The team relied heavily on defense with Hunt’s goalkeepers shutting out the opposition 13 times, including six consecutive matches, on its way to becoming a West Region Finalist in the NCAA DII tournament. It was the furthest tournament run by the Broncos since their National Runner-Up season in 1999. For his efforts, Hunt was promoted to the head assistant coach for the 2015 season under new head coach Vanessa Valentine. The team put together another winning record at 9-7-2 and earned an appearance in the CCAA Tournament.

Hunt began his coaching career in youth soccer with the San Diego and Los Angeles Surf, where he served as the Director of Coaching and a Head Coach from 2006-2016.

A native of the United Kingdom, Hunt graduated from England’s University of Wolverhampton in 2005 with a degree in sports studies. During school vacations, he would help out the Aston Villa Football Club through its “Coaching in the Community” program.
