SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State recently finished its penultimate year in the Mountain West by winning five league championships, tied for the most in the league among sports the Aztecs compete in. It is the fourth straight year SDSU had the most MW championships (among sports San Diego State competes in) after winning a league-high six each of the previous three years.

As San Diego State gets ready to move into the Pac-12 starting on July 1, 2026, it has 101 Mountain West championships, the most in league history for sports the Aztecs compete in.

The Aztecs captured five MW titles in the 2024-25 campaign, including a swimming & diving title and a women’s basketball tournament championship in the winter, and in the spring a women’s tennis regular season crown, a men’s golf title and a softball tournament win. SDSU also captured regular season title in men’s soccer in its first year of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

Nationally, San Diego State has the second-best combined football and men’s basketball records since the start of the 2010 football season, going a combined 506-199 for a 71.8 winning percentage, trailing only Ohio State (72.0). Oregon (.716), Duke (.715), Alabama (.696), Wisconsin (.687), Michigan State (.686), Arizona (.681), Kentucky (.681) and Boise State (.678) round out the top 10.

The men’s soccer team gave the Aztecs their first conference championship in school history by going 7-0-1 in WAC play with six shutouts in eight matches. Ryan Hopkins was named the Coach of the Year and Djibril Doumbia was named the Goalkeeper of the Year.

The swimming & diving team then secured its fourth consecutive league title and sixth in the last seven years by winning the 2025 MW Championships in Houston in February. Individually, Valentina Lopez Arevalo  garnered Mountain West Diver of the Meet accolades for the second year in a row and Roland McDonald was named the MW Dive Coach of the Year for the fourth time. Additionally, Alex Roberts was presented with the league’s Senior Recognition Award for her dedication to sport, team and community.

Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team claimed its first MW Tournament title in 13 years with a 72-68, triple-overtime win over Wyoming in March. It was the third MW Tournament championship for the Aztecs, who reached 25 victories in a season for the first time since winning a school-record 27 in the 2012-13 campaign. Veronica Sheffey scored a career-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists en route to being named the tournament’s MVP, while Naomi Panganiban joined Sheffey on the all-tournament team.

The women’s tennis team was the next San Diego State program to claim a title after beating UNLV, 4-3, on April 17 to win the regular-season crown. It was the fourth regular season championship for SDSU and last under head coach Peter Mattera, who retired in May after 33 seasons at the helm. Long-time associate/assistant coach Nicolas Vinel took over for Mattera after the announcement.

The San Diego State men’s golf team won its fourth consecutive MW Championship and seventh overall, beating runner-up UNLV by 23 strokes. The Aztecs became the first team in league history to sweep the major awards with individual medalist Justin Hastings being named the MW Golfer of the Year, Harry Takis chosen as the MW Freshman of the Year and Ryan Donovan selected as the MW Coach of the Year.

The softball team finished off SDSU’s championship campaign by winning conference tournament for a third straight season since it came back from a 17-year hiatus. Cece Cellura was named the tournament MVP, while Cali Decker, Julie Holcomb and Bella Espinoza all made the all-tournament team. San Diego State has a league-record nine regular-season titles and three tournament championships.

Joining Doumbia, Hastings and Lopez Arevalo as conference players of the year were Magoon Gwath (men’s basketball defensive player of the year) and Quinn Waiki (softball defensive player of the year). Gwath, Takis and Shea Rubright (volleyball newcomer of the year) garnered freshmen and newcomer of the year awards, respectively, while Shaquena Foote (MW indoor track performer of the meet), Cellura and Sheffey were each conference tournament MVPs.
