RENO, Nev. – San Diego State dropped the rubber game of its Mountain West weekend series against Nevada by an 11-1 count in seven innings Sunday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
The Aztecs fell victim to the big inning as the Wolf Pack sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on seven hits to build an insurmountable lead.
With the loss, SDSU (16-37, 11-16 MW) finds itself in a tie for seventh place in the conference standings with Washington State, as the top six teams qualify for the MW Championship in Mesa, Arizona later this month. The Aztecs will battle the Cougars in San Diego next weekend in a pivotal series to close out the regular season.
Conversely, Nevada (31-20, 17-10 MW) took over sole possession of first place, while Fresno State and New Mexico slipped into a tie for second, followed by UNLV, Air Force and San José State, with the latter two teams tied for fifth.
Nevan Noonan (3-for-3) finished with three of the Aztecs’ eight hits on Sunday, including a two-out single to right field in the first. The SDSU junior promptly stole second before racing home on CJ Moran’s double to left center, accounting for the visitors’ lone run of the contest.
On the flip side, Taylor Holder (2 RBIs), Jacob Doyle (2 RBIs) and Jayce Dobie each totaled three hits to pace the Wolf Pack offense.
In addition, Jake Harvey (2 hits) doubled home a pair of runs to highligth Nevada’s big seven-run third.
Holder and Doyle also went deep with solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, to extend the Wolf Pack advantage to 9-1.
The contest ended shortly thereafter in the seventh when Jack Metcho and Harvey crossed the plate on Sean Yamaguchi’s single to left, giving the hosts the run-rule victory.
Previously, Metcho lifted a single of his own to left field and stole second before advancing to third on Harvey’s base hit through the right side. Harvey then moved into scoring position himself with another steal of second.
Nevada starter Casey Burfield (4-2) went the distance to earn the victory, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts, while his SDSU counterpart Garvey Rumary (2.2 IP) took the loss (2-7).
