SAN DIEGO -- Pavana Nagaraj set a San Diego State freshman school record in the long jump to lead the track and field team at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday in Walnut, California.
Nagaraj posted a leap of 20 feet, 9 inches (6.32 meters) to best a field of 47 entrants in the long jump. It broke her own class record of 20-02.50 (6.16m), set April 5 at the Triton Invitational. The jump is also the fourth-best leap in school history, which came on her fifth attempt of the night. All five of her jumps (she fouled on her third attempt) cleared 20 feet.
The Aztecs also shined in the pole vault, taking first, fourth and eighth, respectively. Jordan Leveque won the event by clearing 12-09.50 (3.90m). Peyton Bedrosian equaled Leveque, but came in fourth, while Kayla Tassara cleared 12-03.50 for eighth.
Anna Mager and Sophia Wolf each logged a runner-up finish. Mager was second out of 32 in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.27 seconds, while Wolf came in second out of 28 in the 800 in 2:09.08, just behind Arizona State’s Taylor Brown (2:09.00).
Maya Gorman was eighth in the long jump in 19-02.00 (5.84m), while Olivia Hicks had a pair of top-20 finishes in the 100 (17th, 11.84) and 200 (19th, 24.31). Aji Mbye was 14th in the 100 in 11.82.
SDSU also had five runners in various 1,500-meter sections at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California, with Lauren Harper leading the way with a time of 4:28.98 in the invitational section. Harper’s time was a day after running the second-fastest 800 (2:05.00) in school history.
San Diego State will wrap up its busy week with the invitational events at the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday.
