COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second time this season, San Diego State softball’s Cece Cellura has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Cellura is sharing the award with Nevada’s Hailey McLean after they both pitched well in 1-0 games between the Aztecs and Wolf Pack on Thursday and Saturday.

San Diego State (22-12, 6-3) was bested 1-0 in the series opener on Thursday. After falling on Friday by a 5-2 score in a game where the Wolf Pack homered three times, the Aztecs bounced back on Saturday in a 1-0 win when Jade Ignacio singled in Bella Espinoza in the eighth inning and Cellura slammed the door on Nevada.

Cellura started Thursday’s series opener, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on five hits and no walks while striking out four hitters across her six innings of work. With two on and one out in the fourth inning on Saturday, Cellura entered the circle and pitched the remainder of the eight-inning game, allowing just two hits and two walks (one intentional) while striking out six hitters in the final 4.2 innings to earn the win. Over the weekend, she went 1-1 and put together a 0.66 ERA and a 5.00 K:BB ratio in 10.2 innings while striking out ten batters. Cellura is winning MW Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season (February 17) and third time in her career (April 15, 2024). This is the Aztecs’ fifth weekly award this season as Cali Decker and Lala Macario have each been named Player of the Week and Dee Dee Hernandez also brought home Pitcher of the Week honors.

San Diego State plays two games each against a pair of Mountain West opponents this week. On Wednesday, the Aztecs will host the Fresno State Bulldogs for a doubleheader at SDSU Softball Stadium. The teams are scheduled to play at noon and 2:30 p.m.  This weekend, SDSU heads to Fort Collins, Colorado, to take on the Colorado State Rams in a two-game series. The first pitches are slated for 1 p.m. MT/noon PT on Saturday and noon MT/11 a.m. PT on Sunday. All four games will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
