No. 20 Water Polo Downed in Aztec Invitational Finale

The Aztecs were led by four goals from Mimi Stoupas but could not overcome a four-goal deficit after the opening quarter against No. 17 Indiana.

SAN DIEGO – No. 20 San Diego State water polo trailed No. 17 Indiana 6-2 after eight minutes and never recovered in a 14-7 loss in its final game of the 2025 Aztec Invitational on Sunday morning at Aztec Aquaplex.

Mimi Stoupas paced the offense for SDSU with four goals, her second hat trick and third multi-goal game in the team’s four contests over the weekend. With one goal each were Aiyana Mendoza, Sofia Righetti, Juilanne Stark, and Claudia Valdes. In goal, Tiaare Ahovelo took the loss.

Indiana scored the first goal of the game, at the 6:22 mark, but Righetti tied it up with a strike with 5:51 on the clock. The Hoosiers then scored five straight goals to lead 6-1 before Stoupas ended the streak with the final goal of the period. SDSU (12-9) was looking at a 6-2 deficit heading into the second quarter.

Indiana (15-6) pushed its advantage back to five goals, 7-2, 43 seconds into the second before Stoupas, at the 6:58 mark, got the goals back on her second of the day. It was 8-3 when Stoupas got the hat trick with 2:25 before the intermission. Valdes banged the back of the cage with one minute on the clock to make it 8-5 heading into the half.

At the 6:19 mark of the third quarter, Stoupas got her fourth goal, to draw the Scarlet and Black to 8-6. Indiana scored 19 seconds later to go up 9-6 and it was 10-6 with 3:33 to play in the period. Stark made it 10-7 at the 2:31 mark and that was the score heading into the final eight minutes.

IU scored four consecutive times to open the fourth, the last coming with 1:05 left to play and led 14-7. Mendoza got the final goal of the game, with 39 seconds to play, for the final score of 14-8.
