LAS VEGAS – San Diego State fell to Boise State, 62-52, on Thursday in a quarterfinal game of the Mountain West Tournament.
It was the first loss by the fourth-seeded Aztecs (21-9) in a Mountain West Tournament opening game since 2007, snapping a 17-game winning streak in conference tournament openers, which was the third-longest active streak in the country.
SDSU held the fifth-seeded Broncos (23-9) to 33.9 percent shooting from the field, including a 27.5 percent mark from three-point range, but was outrebounded, 40-28, including a decisive 13-4 mark on the offensive side. BS outscored San Diego State, 18-3, in second-chance opportunities and 19-9 off turnovers.
Nick Boyd had a game-high 20 points on 6 of 12 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc. Boyd was the only Aztec in double figures scoring. Jared Coleman-Jones added seven points and nine rebounds.
SDSU led, Boise State, 33-22, with 1:24 left in the first half, but was outscored, 40-19, for the rest of the game.
Alvaro Cardenas led the Broncos with 16 points and four assists, while Tyson Degenhart added 14, and Andrew Meadow and Pearson Carmichael chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
San Diego State will find out its postseason destination on Sunday.
