FRESNO, Calif. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (17-7, 6-5) won at Fresno State (15-9, 6-5) 61-57 Wednesday evening. This was the Aztecs’ third win in a row, and they improved to 8-2 in road games.
“Defense travels. We’re doing a much better job on the road this year and defense is a big part of that,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “It’s been an emphasis for us all season and it’s an area where we are continuing to improve.”
This was the 12th time SDSU has held an opponent under 60 points and 13th time limiting an opponent to 40% shooting or worse.
The Aztecs held the Bulldogs to 17 points on just six field goals in the first half as they built their lead to 14 points. Adryana Quezada scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the first half.
Kim Villalobos also scored in double-digits with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Veronica Sheffey added 11 points and had a game-high five assists.
The Bulldogs matched their first half total of 17 points just seven minutes into the third quarter after they made seven of their first eight shots.
Fresno State pulled within four points early in the fourth quarter, but SDSU was able to push the lead back to nine points.
The Bulldogs’ Mia Jacobs, the leading scorer in the Mountain West, was held to 4-for-13 shooting.
