SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team plays at Fresno State Wednesday at 6 p.m.

 

Aztec Tidbits

  • SDSU is coming off a 59-46 win at New Mexico Saturday. The Aztecs never trailed in the game.
  • The Aztecs held the Lobos to 23% shooting. This was just the second time in the last 14 years that SDSU held an opponent to 23% shooting or worse on the road.
  • SDSU had more assists (16) than New Mexico had field goals (15).
  • The Aztecs had a season-high 53 rebounds vs. the Lobos Saturday, led by Cali Clark’s career-high 17 boards. SDSU is 11-2 when they outrebound their opponent.
  • SDSU outscored the Lobos 38-20 in the paint, their biggest advantage in the paint since the MW opener against Boise State (48-20).
  • Prior to the New Mexico game, the Aztecs beat first place UNLV. SDSU trailed by as much as 10 points in the second half and Veronica Sheffey scored a driving lay-up through traffic at the buzzer to secure the win. UNLV had won 51 of their previous 52 Mountain West games and 23 straight on the road.
  • SDSU is 7-2 on the road. Their seven road wins are the most in the Mountain West and are SDSU’s most in a season since 2012-13 (10). The Aztecs 77.8% winning percentage on the road would be their highest since the 1996-97 season.
  • The Aztecs are holding opponents to 39.4% shooting from the field and 30.4% from three in conference play, both of which lead the Mountain West.
  • The Aztecs have held their opponent under 60 points 11 times (10-1) and under 40% shooting in 12 games (10-2).

Player Notes

  • Veronica Sheffey is averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game in conference play.
  • Sheffey has scored in double-digits 14 times, the most on the team. She has scored 10 or more points in all but two conference games so far.
  • Sheffey is 39-for-43 (90.7%) from the line during conference play.
  • Nat Martinez is shooting 55% from the field and 44% from three in conference play.
  • Martinez has won the Mountain West Freshman of the Week three times. The Aztecs have won a conference-best five MW FOTW awards (Naomi Panganiban, 2). Combined with the men’s program, SDSU has won the award 11 times, the next closest is CSU with five.
  • Adryana Quezada is one of six players nationally to have over 1,500 points & 700 rebounds while shooting at least 50% from the field and 70% from the line.
  • Cali Clark had a career-high 17 rebounds at UNM Saturday. This tied for the second most by an Aztec in the Mountain West era (26 years).
  • Clark is fourth in the nation among active players in rebounds per minute (minimum 100 games). She was second in the nation last year.
  • In Clark’s 109 games at Colorado State, she had double-digits rebounds six times and one double-double. This season she has 10 games with 10 or more rebounds and six double-doubles.
  • Clark is third in the Mountain West in blocks and rebounds.
  • Kim Villalobos set a school record by playing in her 142nd game on Saturday.
  • Villalobos has only missed five games in her career and has played in 100 straight and made 92 consecutive starts.
  • Villalobos is one of five players in the nation with at least 1,100 points, 750 rebounds, 200 assists, 175 steals and 100 blocks in her career. She recorded her 100th career block last Saturday.
  • Villalobos is in the top ten in SDSU history in games, rebounds and blocks.
  • Erin Houpt is the only player in the nation to shoot at least 40% from three and 90% from the line in her career.
  • Houpt is 93.1% (161-173) from the line in her career, the best in the nation (minimum 150 made).
  • Houpt’s 41.8% career three-point percentage is 10th in the nation (minimum 150 made). She is 24-for-53 (45.3%) from three this season.
  • Houpt had a season-high five rebounds last Saturday.
  • Naomi Panganiban has won Mountain West Freshman of the Week twice. She is second on the team in minutes played in conference play.
  • Panganiban led SDSU with 17 points last Saturday. She has scored in double-digits in four of her last five games.

 

Opponent Notebook (Fresno State)

  • The Bulldogs are 15-8 on the year and 6-4 in MW play.
  • They have won three games in a row. They scored 99 points vs San Jose State in their last game.
