ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Hannah Waller captured the long jump to lead San Diego State on the second day of the Mountain West Indoor Championships Friday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Waller also ran the fastest 60-meter time in the prelims and is one of 10 Aztecs who qualified for the finals in their respective events on Saturday.
In the long jump, Waller bested the field with a leap of 6.38 meters (20 feet, 11 ¼ inches), which was a collegiate best and the second-best indoor mark in program history. The jump came on her fourth attempt. Waller also ran the 60 meters in 7.29 seconds, which was the fastest time out of 22 competitors.
Three field events were contested on Friday with Jenna Fee Feyerabend leading the way with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.74m (5-8.50) a day after winning the pentathlon with 4,183 points.
Peyton Bedrosian tied for fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.01 meters (13-1.75), while Jordan Leveque and Kayla Tassara tied for sixth and 10th, respectively, by clearing 3.76 meters (12-4.00).
In the long jump, Xiamara Young came in fifth with a leap of 6.01 meters (19-8.75).
Shaquena Foote, meanwhile, got her meet off to an impressive start, running the fastest prelim times in both the 200 and 400 en route to qualifying for tomorrow’s finals. Foote opened with the 400, clocking a time of 52.73 seconds, the fastest out of 35 entrants. She then ran 23.28 in the 200 for the fastest time out of 26 entrants.
Aji Mbye made tomorrow’s finals in both the 200 (3rd, 23.52) and 60 (4th, 7.38), while Charlize James (2nd, 8.43), Jada Pierra (6th, 8.55) and Mia Reid (7th, 8.63) all qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Lauren Harper (3rd, 2:11.46) and Sophia Wolf (6th, 2:11.75) each moved onto the 800-meter final on Saturday as well.
Olivia Hicks logged a pair of top-10 finishes in the prelims, but did not advance to tomorrow’s final in both the 200 (9th, 23.90) and 60 (10th, 7.55).
SDSU is in third place after seven of the 17 completed events with 37 points, only trailing Colorado State (58.5) and host New Mexico (45.5). Air Force and Fresno State round out the top 5 with 26 points apiece.
The track finals get underway at 11:10 a.m. MT (10:10 a.m. PT) Saturday with the triple jump starting the field action for San Diego State at 11:30 a.m. MT (10:30 a.m. PT).
