SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (19-9, 8-7) cruised to a 72-43 win over Nevada (11-17, 6-9) in front of 4,088 fans on Field Trip Day inside Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs never trailed and held the Wolf Pack to 25% shooting from the field and 2-for-25 (8%) shooting from three.
“That was fun! I thought we played our best half of basketball to start and what an amazing crowd we had,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “I loved hearing the arena roar when those threes were going in.”
The freshmen duo of Naomi Panganiban and Nat Martinez led the Aztecs in scoring. Panganiban had 15 points for the second straight game and Martinez had 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting with 10 of her points coming in the opening five minutes.
Martinez and the Aztecs hit the ground running, making 10 of their first 12 shots as SDSU opened up a 16-4 lead.
The Aztecs had assists on 16 of their 18 field goals in the first half and led by as much as 23 points. Their offense cooled off in the third quarter, but their defense remained stifling, holding the Wolf Pack to 19 percent shooting in the second half and just four points in the fourth quarter.
SDSU outscored Nevada 36 to 18 in the paint and 30 to 11 in points off turnovers.
