No. 20 Men’s Golf in 14th at John A. Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Kaua’i -- The San Diego State men’s golf team shot a 14-over-par 294 and is 14th after the first day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Wednesday at the par-70, 7,098-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala in Lihue, Kaua‘i, Hawaii.

The Aztecs (+14), who entered the tournament 20th in the latest NCAA golf computer rankings, is ahead of No. 57 California (+17), host Hawai’i (+19) and UTEP (+20) in the 17-team field. No. 16 Utah was the only team to shoot under par and leads at -7, followed by No. 10 Illinois (E), No. 41 UNLV (E), No. 21 Brigham Young (+1) and New Mexico (+2).

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) had the best round of the day for San Diego State, carding a 1-over-par 71, which is good enough to tie for 24th out of 101 golfers. Takis recorded five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 384-yard seventh hole.

Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), meanwhile, are tied for 55th at 4-over 74. Hastings sank three birdies on the day, offset by five bogeys and a double bogey. Kowack, meanwhile, logged three birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

Senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 70th at +5 and junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is in a tie for 82nd at +7.
