SAN DIEGO – With a 2-0 start to the 2025 season, San Diego State lacrosse is now headed to South Carolina this weekend to take on Winthrop on Friday and Wofford on Sunday.
Friday’s opening draw is set for 1 p.m. PT and Sunday’s game will get underway at 9 a.m. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
San Diego State and Winthrop have met just twice before, and the Aztecs lead the series 2-0. The last game was a 17-7 Aztec win on March 18, 2015.
This will be the season opener for the Eagles, who are coming off a 2-13 2024 campaign and were picked seventh in the Big South Conference for 2025. They are led by Interim Head Coach Hannah Potter.
Wofford is off to a 0-1 start, having dropped its first game 14-10 against Old Dominion. Picked fourth in the Big South preseason poll, the Terriers returned ten starters and 21 letterwinners from last year’s roster, including Bria Foley, a senior attacker who led the conference in points and assists per game last year.
The only game played between the two programs was on March 18, 2018, which the Aztecs won 23-4.
Last time out, the Aztecs took down Eastern Michigan 15-10 in Ypsilanti to advance to 2-0. It was a back-and-forth battle, but the Scarlet and Black put seven in the net in the fourth quarter to pull away with the win.
In the season opener, San Diego State defeated Detroit Mercy 17-5. It was a dominant offensive performance with seven Aztecs able to find scoring opportunities. Frankie Garcia (6), Matty Spaeth (3), Bella Tan (3), Kate Christos (2), Sara Toner (1), Talie Richardson (1) and Nikki Seven (1) each put points on the board.
25 Aztecs got minutes in the opening weekend, including nine freshmen and three transfers. Keira Doyle-Odenbach, Maya Tillman, Bella Tan, Sophia Miller and Matty Spaeth made their first appearances in the starting lineup.
Three Aztecs earned conference honors for their week one performances. Sophomore Frankie Garcia, junior Kate Christos and redshirt freshman Bella Tan were named the Big 12 Attack Player, Midfielder and Freshman of the Week.
Garcia and Tan led the Aztec offense in week one, combining for 16 of the team’s 32 goals, each with eight. Garcia scored six at Detroit Mercy, which is tied for the sixth most goals by an Aztec in a single game. Tan led the victory over Eastern Michigan with five goals, three of which were in the fourth quarter. Christos was a difference-maker on both sides of the field with a combined seven draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
