RENO, Nev. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (13-4, 2-2) cruised to an 81-62 win at Nevada (7-10, 2-2) Wednesday evening. The Aztecs shot 56.6% from the floor, their best ever in a Mountain West road game.
“Our staff put together a great game plan,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “And then we did a great job executing it and we had Nevada confused. I’m really proud of them and it’s always great to win on the road in the Mountain West.”
Four Aztecs finished in double-figures led by Adryana Quezada (20) and Veronica Sheffey (18), who both scored a season-high. Sheffey was 7-for-8 from the floor and had just one turnover while leading the team in minutes (33) and plus/minus (+24).
Quezada scored 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the fourth quarter.
The freshman backcourt duo of Naomi Panganiban (12) and Nat Martinez (11) also reached double-digits.
Nevada began the game on a 9-2 run, but the Aztecs responded with a 14-1 run and never surrendered the lead after that.
In the second quarter, the Aztecs held the Wolf Pack without a field goal for over five minutes as they built a double-digit lead after holding Nevada to 11 second quarter points.
“Jazlen [Green] was really good defensively tonight,” Terry-Hutson praised. “She didn’t score much, but she was great on the other end of the floor.”
After struggling from the line in their previous game, SDSU was 17-for-19 Wednesday.
The Aztecs committed just 11 turnovers and held a 23-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
Lexie Givens paced the Wolf Pack with 17 points.
STAT OF THE GAME
SDSU’s field goal percentage of 56.6% was their best vs. a Mountain West team since Feb. 12, 2011.
