FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – San Diego State’s Valentina Lopez Arevalo and Summer Westmoreland advanced to the finals of the 1-meter springboard event to highlight Friday’s competition at the Lumberjack Invitational on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
For the second straight day, the Aztecs were paced by Lopez Arevalo, who placed fourth in the finals with a total of 289.40 points, finishing behind a trio of competitors from host NAU in Victoria Knapp (305.00), Grace Wesche (304.20) and Mackenna Stocker (291.40).
After a fifth-place effort in the preliminaries with a score of 276.10, Lopez Arevalo ultimately climbed one position in the standings, eclipsing an NCAA zone qualifying standard (265) in both sessions.
Westmoreland also moved up one spot between rounds, surpassing an NCAA zone qualifying mark on both occasions. The fellow Aztec senior was slotted seventh in the preliminaries (270.15) before finishing sixth in the finals (266.30).
In addition, SDSU received a strong performance from Flagstaff native Alina Skrocki, who captured her second consecutive title in the consolation finals after logging a collegiate-best 279.50 points to exceed an NCAA qualifying standard of her own. The Aztec sophomore just missed advancing to the championship finals after placing ninth in the preliminary round with a score of 258.55.
Rounding out the SDSU delegation was junior Taylor Konopacke, who finished 17th in the preliminary session with a total of 208.50 points.
The Lumberjack Diving Invitational concludes on Saturday with the preliminaries and finals of the platform event, starting at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT.
The meet features divers from Northern Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico and New Mexico State.
