LAKE SHERWOOD, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team finished second behind fifth-ranked Texas by a stroke at 7-under-par 845 against a national caliber field at the Southwestern Invitational Wednesday on the par-71, 7,076-yard Sherwood Country Club. The Aztecs, who are 32nd in the latest NCAA computer rankings, carded a 5-under 279 in today’s final round, bested only by a 6-under 278 by Texas.
In a 14-team field that included seven teams in the top 25, SDSU (-7) finished ahead of notable programs No. 15 Vanderbilt (-4), No. 19 Pepperdine (E), No. 14 Florida (+5), No. 43 USC (+11), No. 44 UNLV (+11), No. 24 Duke (+12), No. 10 UCLA (+27) and No. 11 Arizona (+32) and four other teams.
Fresh off capturing the 2025 Latin American Amateur Championship last weekend in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and receiving an invitation to compete in the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and exemptions into The Open and the U.S. Open, senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) tied for second out of 75 golfers at 4-under 209, one shot behind medalist Wells Williams of Vanderbilt. Hastings shot a 2-under 69 in today’s final round, sinking four birdies against two bogeys.
Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 10th at 1-under 212 after shooting a 1-over 72 on Wednesday. Chokprajakchat was 2-under through 14 holes but bogeyed three of his final four holes. Chokprajakchat matched Hastings with a 69 on Monday and a 71 yesterday.
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) each tied for 31st at +5. Kowack shot a 1-under 70 in today’s final round, while Sampson had a 5-over 76. Kowack had five birdies in his round, including the par-4, 446-yard 18th after bogeying the par-4, 452-yard 16th and double bogeying the par-3, 232-yard 17th. Sampson also closed with a birdie and eagled the par-5, 536-yard 11th, but also had four bogeys and two double bogeys in his final round.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), who was unable to play in Tuesday’s second round because of a minor injury, bounced back with a 3-under 68 today to score for the second time for SDSU in the tournament. Takis logged five birdies and two bogeys today.
SDSU next competes in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course Hokuala, Feb. 13-15, in Lihue, Hawaii.
