BERKELEY, Calif. – San Diego State women’s tennis wrapped up the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Grand Canyon at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The Aztecs bounced back after an opening day loss to No. 17 Oklahoma to advance to 2-1 on the season.
The Aztecs were the first on the board, taking the doubles point after securing wins on the first and third courts. Jo-Yee Chan and Zoe Olmos finished first, defeating Bella Crossman and Angelina Mihajlovic 6-2 on the third court. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Dania Deaifi and Karina Hofbauer on the top court. Ninon Martinache and Vesa Gjinaj were all tied up 4-4 with Gala Arangio and Valentina Del Marco when the match was abandoned.
The Lopes answered with the first singles point. Crossman took court four 6-0, 6-3 against Varul to make the score 1-1.
Martinache put the Aztecs back out front after a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win over Arangio on the third court. Olmos added to the lead over on court four, defeating Mihajlovic 6-2, 6-2.
Gjinaj clinched the match for the Aztecs. After a tight first set, which Gjinaj won 7-5, the sophomore coasted to a 6-1 second-set victory on the bottom court.
Alogo earned the final point of the match, taking down Deaifi 6-4, 6-4 on court two.
In the top spot, Chan’s match was left unfinished in the third set. Grand Canyon’s Karina Hofbauer was leading 2-6, 6-2, 3-2 when the match was called.
The Aztecs will be back in action on Feb. 8 as they host Baylor at noon, followed by a Feb. 9 matchup against Denver.
