SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis is gearing up for its first road match of the season, heading to Los Angeles to take on the USC Trojans on Monday at 3 p.m. The Aztecs enter the match 2-0 after defeating UC San Diego in a doubleheader on January 11.

Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Liam Spiers opened their spring season on a high note, each going 2-0 in singles at the home opener. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice defeated UC San Diego’s Diogo Tinoco by a score of 6-4, 6-2 on the second court before moving into the top court for the second match, where he cruised past Carson Lee in a 6-3, 6-1 win. Spiers was the clincher for the Aztecs in the morning match, marking the first of his career. The senior went to three sets in his matchup against Robert Freedman on the sixth court, putting the fourth point on the board with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 victory. He won his second match of the day 6-2, 6-2 against Charles Qian. Mathieu Josserand also earned the first clinch of his career in the Aztecs’ second match, taking down David Adamson in a three-set comeback 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Alexander Mandma and Philipp Bosse also grabbed their first victories of the dual season. On court five, Mandma outscored Adamson 6-4, 6-1 in the first match of the day. Playing on the second court in the afternoon match, Bosse defeated Pelayo Rodriguez 6-4, 6-3.

The Aztecs went 2-2 in doubles with Mandma/Josserand taking down Pellouchoud/Rodriguez 6-4 and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice/Janson finishing 6-1 over Adamson/Freedman.

USC will kick off its spring season against UC Irvine at 11 a.m. in the first leg of a doubleheader on Monday. Last season, the Trojans had a 7-16 overall record, 2-5 in the Pac-12. Similarly to the Aztecs, they welcomed several newcomers to this year’s roster and are led by senior returners Peter Makk and Karl Lee.

The last time the two programs met was on Feb. 7, 2021, when the No. 1-ranked Trojans blanked the Aztecs 7-0.
