SEATTLE, Wash. – Following a historic day one in Washington, San Diego State’s distance runners had a tremendous showing at Mile City on Saturday, headlined by Lauren Harper’s victory in the open section.
The Weaverville, Calif. followed yesterday’s senior class record 800m run with the fourth fastest mile in program history. Her time of 4:55.33 was also the fastest among the 216 runners in the open section of the meet, winning the event by just over a second.
Vanessa Cabello finished eighth in the open section with a time of 5:05.33, the ninth fastest mark in program history. It is her second top ten time of the weekend after running the third quickest 3,000m run on Friday.
Samantha Wood (5:07.96) and Sara Jones (5:08.32) finished 19th and 20th the open section. Their times rank just outside SDSU’s top ten at 11th and 13th all-time, respectively.
In the invite section, Isabella Fauria crossed the line in 4:57.90 for the fifth-fastest time in SDSU history alongside Emily Van Valkenburg’s 5:02.81 for seventh all-time. It is Van Valkenburg's second top ten time of the weekend as well running the fourth best 3k yesterday.
Harper and Fauria become just the fourth and fifth different Aztecs in program history to post sub-five-minute mile times joining Monica Joyce (1982), Lynn Kanuka (1981) and Jessica Kain (2023).
San Diego State will be off next weekend and return to competition at the end of the month for Kansas State’s DeLoss Dodd Invitational on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
